Making Social Media work for Haiti!
By Kim Kubo Caloroso
Social Networking... What is it? Other than it being a time drain, and a way to send eachother virtual messages on Facebook... It is meant to connect with people for a common cause and we are using it to get things done!
The really exciting thing that happened this week putting social networking into action, is that a new website along with Facebook FanPage was created for "Life & Hope for Haiti" and in 72 short hours, we have collected over 35 medical professionals to volunteer for mission relief work!
Check it out:
The Facebook FanPage is:
Life and Hope For Haiti * * Adventist Medical Evangelism Network * AMEN *
Now, thats what I call social networking!
How do you use social media to get things done?

History of AMEN
By AMEN MessengerAdventist Medical Evangelism Network was formed by a group of physicians and dentists who have a burden to revive medical evangelism and make it an integral part of their profession. Dr. Naren James, AMEN President 2005–2008, was one of the founders. He describes his convictions leading up to the formation of AMEN…
Over the past five years I have gone through a transition as I restudied the gospels. I have been impressed by Jesus’ ministry and personally convicted to emulate it in my personal and professional life. One day during my personal devotion I was impressed that I needed to share my experience with other physicians and create a network to encourage each other to make medical ministry the focus of our profession. I firmly believe that physicians and dentists can make an incredible impact around the world if we truly begin to make medical evangelism the focus of our practices.
The founding physicians and dentists decided to host a luncheon at the 2004 ASI convention focusing on the topic of medical evangelism. The meeting proved to be such a success they decided to meet in February 2005 to discuss the formation of a non-profit organization to train & equip physicians and dentists to be effective medical evangelists. The meeting was to be held at Dr. John Chung’s house in Dalton, Georgia. Soon the number of attendees grew so large the venue had to be changed to Cohutta Springs Ranch. Approximately 50 people attended the meetings at Cohutta Springs where Pastor Mark Finley spoke about what true medical evangelism is. The group was inspired and challenged and unanimously decided to officially form what is now AMEN—Adventist Medical Evangelism Network.
The Lord has really blessed this organization! Since 2005, AMEN has hosted two annual conferences with approximately 220 attendees; coordinated medical clinics for a mission trip to India in collaboration with Maranatha and Amazing Facts; integrated health talks into a large scale evangelistic series in Detroit, Michigan; begun publication of a medical evangelism journal called “the Medical Evangelist” and begun work on health related television programs to air on a variety of television stations with the eventual goal of having its own television station that hosts health and evangelistic programming 24-hour a day, 7 days a week.
Despite its infancy and humble beginnings, we believe God is using AMEN to inspire physicians and dentists in the United States and around the world to focus once again on healing not only the body, but the soul as well.
Mission, Vision & Objectives
By AMEN MessengerMission
The Adventist Medical Evangelism Network (AMEN) exists to motivate, train, and equip Seventh-day Adventist physicians and dentists to become effective medical evangelists who will unite with lay people, pastors and church administration in taking the “everlasting gospel” (Rev 14:6-12) to the entire world in these last hours of earth’s history.
Vision
We envision the training of thousands of Seventh-day Adventist physicians and dentists to be effective medical evangelists. These committed, motivated, and consecrated Adventist physicians and dentists will model Christ’s methods of loving service through the ministry of healing which will naturally open hearts to the gospel and the truths of the Bible. AMEN will help cultivate the following essential qualities in each of these physician/dentist evangelists:
- The deep conviction that the healing ministry is a calling from God for His service.
- The belief that the great commission is the privilege and responsibility of every Christian physician/dentist. Therefore each physician/dentist should model their practice after the loving ministry of Jesus.
- An individual integrity which includes a living personal faith, a healthy, temperate lifestyle, and a Christian commitment in the family.
- A familiarity with and desire to follow the divine counsels on medical ministry given in the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy.
- A knowledge and application of practical approaches for spiritual ministry and evangelism in the clinical setting.
Objectives
The following objectives will promote the vision of developing effective physician/dentist medical missionary evangelists:
- Create a society perpetually dedicated and exclusively focused on the above mission
- Hold annual national conferences which will include the following features:
- Inspirational messages to encourage medical evangelism
- Workshops to train medical evangelists
- Seminars to examine the prophetic principles and guidelines of medical evangelism
- Testimonials of effective physician/dentist evangelism
- Networking opportunities for medical evangelism
- Highlight mission needs and opportunities
- Promote the formation of local and/or regional chapters that might provide sources of fellowship, accountability, and training throughout the year.
- Develop a publication dedicated to Medical Evangelism.
- Plan a missionary support service that will especially provide needed spiritual encouragement to foreign medical missionaries.
- Seek to encourage, mentor, and support Seventh-day Adventist medical students and residents in their development as medical evangelists.
- Actively cooperate with the Seventh-day Adventist church and its supporting ministries to foster, promote and stimulate medical evangelism.

The leadership of the AMEN LLU Student Chapter made the courageous, principled decision not to do recruiting during Sabbath hours, which limited the number of new members that might have joined. President Mark Brown is hopeful that next year’s attendance will be larger during sessions outside Sabbath morning. Under Budget It is always a blessing when a project is managed so as to stay within budget. It is my conference came in at 10% under its original budget. Praise God for economically minded student leadership! Adventist Review Article
The Adventist Review requested that an article be written about the AMEN student conference via Dr. Wes Youngberg, one of the conference speakers. Camille Clarke has submitted a short article for the Adventist Review that should appear sometime this summer.
Successful Book Sale: The student chapter was permitted sell at the conference. They were also able to sell some Natural Remedies Encyclopedias at a low price and still make a profit of around $450. This money is slated to help fund the door-to- door ministry and other future activities. Praise God! The leadership of the AMEN LLU Student Chapter wish to express their praise and thanks to God for the financial support, inspiration, and encouragement of the board and membership of AMEN. A solid foundation for future cooperation has been laid at this inaugural student-led conference. May this partnership serve to hasten Christ’s coming!
AMEN to partner with the Southern Union Chapter of ASI
By AMEN Messenger
Over the weekend of April 3-5, 2009 AMEN was given the opportunity to partner with the Southern Union Chapter of ASI at their annual meeting in Dalton, GA. AMEN was invited to present a special seminar track for medical and dental professionals. On Friday morning, dermatologist Phil Mills shared a two part seminar titled, “Reaching the Professional for Christ.” That afternoon, dermatologist John Chung and radiologist Roger Miller spoke regarding “Sharing with Patients and Colleagues.” Speaking personally, these seminars were a blessing. Those who attended gave testimonies regarding the practical relevance of what they heard. In addition, the leaders of the Southern Union ASI chapter plan to incorporate AMEN in their future events. We believe God has led in this partnership!
